1920s
The Rookery Building is a historical skyscraper in the Loop. Read a summary of its architectural profile here.
Designed by Cornelius Rapp and George Rapp, the seven story Chicago theater was built in 1921 and fills nearly one half of a city block. The theater features a Neo-Baroque French-revival style and serves as the oldest surviving example of this style in Chicago. It has since been placed on the National Register of Historic Places and was listed as a Chicago Landmark.
Built in 1921 and expanded in 1932, the nine story Chicago Main Post Office was the largest post office in the world at its construction. Its overly large and ultimately unnecessary size made it a quagmire of missing packages and constant delays and so was closed in 1997. The Post Office has since been featured in films such as Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. In 2001, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
