Early on in Styx's career, they worked with Wooden Nickel Records. Though unable to achieve national air time while working with Wooden Nickel, the band gained significant popularity in Chicago.

"Come Sail Way" is perhaps Styx most famous song. Released on the 1977 album, The Grand Illusion, "Come Sail Away" was the lead single and made the Billboard Hot 100 list at number 18. The welcome receipt of this single impacted the album's later success in 1978 when it achieved multi-platinum status.

"Lady," perhaps a less impacful single upon its release, achieved local popularity in the Styx's hometown, Chicago. "Lady" did not become popular until Styx left their previous recording label, Wooden Nickel Records, to A&M in 1974 at which point the song gained national air time.
