Description

The Union Stock Yards were the meatpacking district for Chicago. Railroads came together to purchase a swamp south of the city to be a central processing point for the animals coming into the city. For over 60 years, the stockyards processed more meat than any other place in the world. They closed at midnight on July 30, 1971.
