Charles Gates Dawes served as Vice President under President Calvin Coolidge from 1923-1929. After his stint in federal office, Dawes made a concerted effort to raise ten million dollars for the 1933, Chicago World’s Fair entitled, “A Century of Progress.” It is interesting to note that a scant six months after his effort, the twentieth century’s “progress” was interrupted by the opening bell of the Great Depression, the stock market crash of October 24, 1929.[1]
