Financial Stability

Northern Trust Company pictorial map of Chicago's harbor and industrial region as part of their 1928 harbor development proposal.

In 1928, the Northern Trust Company released this map of the Chicago-area harbor and industrial region. The map depicts plans for port facilities in the Calumet area, as river and lake travel was important for industry and commerce. The Northern Trust Company financed many distributors' and manufacturers' movement to the Chicago area. Founded in 1889, the company remained a strong Chicago bank even through the Great Depression, and financed some of Chicago's best known businessmen. Northern Trust may well have been a financial anchor to Chicago even during some of America's most trying economic times.
