The Chicago Daily News was founded in 1875 and printed its last issue in 1978. At its inception, the owners of this afternoon paper sought to appeal to a broader readership than the Chicago Tribune. One way of accomplishing this was to sell the paper for one cent. While the low prices did not last over the years, Chicago Daily News pioneered certain aspects of news reports. For example, in 1922, the paper started one of the nation's first radio columns. Though the paper ultimately could not compete with one such as the Tribune, it is one more account of how Chicago put itself on the map as an innovative city.
